Chapter 13
Anastasia was tired from all the dancing she did at The Knotty Pine, but her body and mind were too wired to sleep. She quenched the passion in her body with a cold shower. She pulled out her laptop and checked her emails to help occupy her mind.
Those emails included notes in ALL CAPS from her father demanding that she tell him where she was, past due notices from credit card companies that she maxed out, and more rejection letters from boutiques that werenât convinced they needed to preorder products that had no proven track record.
Sleep came four hours later. She slept, but she didnât rest. Worry had her tossing and turning all night. Plus with her feelings for David deepening, she was starting to feel torn about not telling him the real deal about her family, particularly her father, whom she sent an email to telling him to stay out of her life forever.
So what if some of her friends were communicating with their fathers on occasion. She never wanted to see or hear from hers again. Nor did she want to talk about him. But how could she avoid not talking about himâ¦eventually?
Would David be as understanding as some of his brothers whoâd already been told by a few of her friends? She didnât know. Was afraid to find out. After all, how do you tell someone that your father was engaged in almost every form of illegal activity known to big cities like New York and Vegas, including prostitution?
As a result of her restless night, Anastasia woke up late and missed breakfast with David. She would have missed breakfast altogether had it not been for the tray of food and beverages he left outside her bedroom door before he ventured outdoors to check on his father ahead of the blizzardâs arrival in full force.
Anastasia ate everything David prepared for her. Every bite had a different emotion attached to it. Soon sheâd eaten most of her feelings and compartmentalized the rest. As usual, she took special care to chew her food fully. One choking incident was enough to last a lifetime. A hot shower, expertly applied makeup, and a cute turquoise jumpsuit made her feel even better.
With her mind much clearer, Anastasia called Bella for some business advice. This particular friend had been independent for years and played by her own rules. Always had.
Bella hadnât gone to college like the rest of them. She went against her fatherâs wishes to open her own nightclub by any means necessary. That strong-willed determination included stripping at a rival club to save money.
âI honestly donât know what to do next,â Anastasia shared as she paced the bedroom floor. âEverything is at a standstill with my makeup line and I refuse to ask Daddy or any of his connections for the money.â
She didnât even want to think about the perfume line she wanted to start once the makeup line was soundly on its feet. Had perfume been easier to sell than makeup, she would have marketed that line first.
